From the editor's desk: The end of the beginning

Issue 9 2020 News & Events

I doubt there are many who will be sad to see 2020 vanishing into history. The year seems to have mimicked the world we live in by revelling in chaos and uncertainty. Economies have been plunged into trouble it’s unlikely they can recover from.

Andrew Seldon.

This has been exacerbated in South Africa by unrest (more than usual) along with the usual race-baiting and corruption, which, combining decades of wholesale looting, COVID-19 and the draconian response to it, has resulted in a no-hope situation that will see the country attaining even ‘junker’ status and taxes increased, further damaging the shrinking tax paying population.

There is hope that we can get back to business in 2021, but there are already rumours of a new lockdown as apparently too many people still have jobs (pardon my sarcasm). We can only hope that we are on a journey of improvement and that this is not just the end of the beginning.

And while security is more necessary than ever in these times, the money just isn’t there in most instances and ‘making do’ with what you have has become the norm – or if you want a less negative expression, ‘sweating your assets’.

That’s not to say the year was a total write-off. In this issue we publish a few of the top products that were released during the year. Space is obviously an issue so these and others that didn’t make it into the print issue will be online and distributed in our news briefs – as will a bunch of additional articles we couldn’t print.

I hope you enjoy the issue and the online stories; our mobile website is rather good, even if we say so ourselves, just right for holiday reading.

Apart from our strange lives this year in the chaos continuum, the Hi-Tech Security Solutions’ team would like to wish all our readers, advertisers and suppliers a safe and relaxing December in which we all get some R&R; and come back to make 2021 awesome.
