Integrated residential estate surveillance

Residential Estate Security Handbook 2019 Integrated Solutions, Surveillance, Residential Estate (Industry)

The buzz word around residential estate security is integration. There are many moving parts and levels of expertise required for a unified threat management system. These include management and supervisory teams, site-specific personnel, access control systems, number plate recognition technology, CCTV, vehicle tracking cameras, body cameras, intrusion technology – the list goes on.

Several brands have developed sections of the solution, but the perfect security system – if this Utopia is even possible – is beyond the industry. The next best thing is an integrated solution that brings the ‘best-of-breed’ out of each technology and brand to give the personnel all the tools they need for access control management and security. Here are a few technologies that are jostling for position in the security technology arena.

Vehicle tracking

Vehicle tracking is no longer limited to the ‘trackers’ out there. The latest technology integrates NVRs with CCTV and uses artificial intelligence to tag, categorise and catalogue vehicles and passengers. In addition, systems such as Kedacom’s AI NVR will use licence plate recognition and facial recognition to speed up access for residents. It will also

mark or blacklist banned and suspicious vehicles. The system will also work with CCTV cameras to track vehicles within an estate and ensure residents’ cars and delivery vehicles are going to designated locations. This is especially useful for golf estates, large office parks and large gated or boomed-off residential areas.

Licence plate recognition

This technology is by no means new, but new analytics features give residential estate security personnel another layer of protection. Optical character recognition reads licence plates and creates vehicle location data. This, alongside a photo of the driver, allows systems to ‘red flag’ analytics data points that fall outside the norms and alert the guard rooms faster than ever before. Other analytics features from brands such as NUUO can be utilised to create additional data points to trigger various types of notifications.

Body-worn cameras

When it comes to perimeter checks, traditional tools used by security personnel are a thing of the past. Modern security companies are using body-worn cameras to assist their personnel. Current body-worn cameras like the Kedacom body-worn cameras include features that make communication with the control room a more detailed and documented process.

Perimeter protection

Modern perimeters don’t only depend on electric fencing and ‘contact alerts’ that only trigger when perpetrators come in contact with the fence or wall. Analytics allows for the creation of ‘invisible trigger zones’ on the inside and outside of the perimeter. This, coupled with PTZ cameras, gives personnel silent trigger warnings before any incidents occur.

All the above technologies and solutions are well and good in isolation. However, their real value comes from a unified surveillance management system. This is where companies such as Forbatt SA work with integrators to first, supply the solutions that will work together and second, advise the installers on the best setup for the project.
