The constant of change

November 2016 News & Events

Having just seen the results on the American election, I thought I would do a Hillary and leave this issue without an editorial column, just like she got someone to tell her supporters to go home because she was going to bed. Apparently I’m not allowed to do that, so much for equality. So here we are at this momentous occasion.

It’s a momentous occasion because this is the final issue of Hi-Tech Security Solutions for the year. However, to ensure you have some holiday reading material, we are sending it out with the Access & Identity Management Handbook 2017. I hope it provides you with hours of entertainment over the long and hopefully quiet December period. You may even want to wrap it up and hand it out as a gift of incalculable value.

Another reason for saying it’s a momentous occasion is because this year marks Elvey’s 70th birthday. Few companies make it past a decade or two at the most, but Elvey has been at it for 70 years. That deserves a pat on the back.

It’s also momentous because Elvey’s CEO, Jack Edery is retiring this year. Jack has been at the helm since I started in the security business so it’s like the end of an era. We have a little memento to Elvey and Jack in this issue with messages from a few industry players. Hi-Tech Security Solutions also wishes Gary Lowe all the best in taking the reins at Elvey.

Another momentous happening, although not quite in the same league as the above, is news that the German BND (their spies) has known for some time that the US intelligence services had access to feeds from software inserted into NetBotz surveillance cameras. This isn’t a hack as we have mentioned in the past, but seems to be a deliberate bit of spyware installed in the cameras. The BND decided not to tell anyone about this, meaning sensitive installations have been compromised for years. (Thanks to Pieter Scholtz for sending me the link via LinkedIn.)

It seems that things are set for an interesting 2017. But before we get there, Hi-Tech Security Solutions would like to thank all our readers, advertisers and information providers for your support over the past year. I would also like to thank the Hi-Tech Security Solutions’ team for all their hard work this year. They definitely pulled a few rabbits out of a few hats.

So, from all at Hi-Tech Security Solutions, we wish you a peaceful and secure festive season, and a successful 2017.
