Taking the lead

The November issue of Hi-Tech Security Solutions is packed full of security news and views, and we have some good news from local companies.

First of all, we take a look at the transport sector and some security requirements in this market. And we print the first article in a series we’re doing on securing the Gautrain. It was a mammoth job with very little in the form of past best practices or case studies the security team could rely on. We will be looking at the various processes involved, without giving away any information that could help the bad guys.

We also look at employee verification, which, while still seen by many as a waste of money, has repeatedly proven itself a money saver, among other benefits. We only recently heard that a political appointment was once again shown to have lied about her qualifications, something one of the companies we interviewed discovered when doing a background check. If this type of dishonesty is rife in the higher echelons of politics, how much more will it be a problem in the real world where people have to be productive to succeed and make a living and companies can’t rely on taxpayers to bail them out of poor management and bad decisions?

Guarding is as old as the hills, but in our feature we discover that many local companies are working to integrate technology into the guarding function to ensure that the guards are doing the best job possible, as well as to be able to keep tabs on the guards and make sure they are safe – a critical concern in a violent society. The great thing is, many of these solutions are homegrown and a step ahead of what other countries are offering.

And on the subject of being a step ahead, two local success stories also feature in this issue. Cathexis is releasing the latest version of its surveillance management software, while RDC has come up with some nifty functionality to make its GPRS alarms more intelligent and accessible. Both articles are well worth a read.

We also look at backups and archiving, a boring task that is very important. You only need to lose your data once to realise how important a backup is.

Another year gone

As you probably know, Hi-Tech Security Solutions doesn’t print a December issue, so this is the last issue of the year. We’ll be back early in January when we look at residential security as well as security in the education sector.
