SAQCC Fire training

June 2015 Conferences & Events, Associations

As part of the directive from the Department of Labour, the SAQCC Fire D&GS training subcommittee is in the process of formulating training programmes and qualifications for authorised persons.

A training matrix was constructed indicating the various levels of registration, from which a set of curricula has been prepared. These curricula are the basis from which all training companies can produce courses for training; this provides continuity of content between training establishments to ensure that learners receive a common base of information. All training courses that meet the requirements of the curricula will be vetted and approved by an independent moderator selected by the SAQCC Fire for listing as a preferred training establishment.

Once all the relevant courses are available, future authorised persons will have to attend these courses as a requirement for registration.

There are moves to align all training with the current requirements of the QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations). The QCTO was established in terms of the Skills Development Act. Its role is to oversee the design, implementation, assessment and certification of occupational qualifications on the Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework (OQSF). This will be an on-going process for the fire systems industry to acquire a formal recognition of qualifications.
