Amendments to the Private Security Industry Regulations

Issue 2 2025 Agriculture (Industry), News & Events, Associations

The changes, proposed by South African Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, are intended to tighten firearm and weapon controls, while increasing regulatory oversight. They are raising serious concerns within the private security sector, with warnings that they could have far-reaching negative consequences for both industry operations and public safety.

As a result of the proposed amendments, and to ensure that the rights of the members associated with the organisations and those who operate within the Private Security Industry are protected, the organisations have joined together to oppose the amendments and have appointed the services of specialist attorney Mr Martin Hood of MJ Hood and Associates, to submit the relevant opposition submissions to PSIRA.

We believe that if these amendments are implemented in their current form, they could seriously undermine the stability and effectiveness of the private security industry and, by extension, the safety of South African citizens. We urge the government to work collaboratively with the sector to find solutions that support accountability and operational viability, and engage with organisations and society on the way forward.

Members of all organisations can continue to submit individual objections and the employer’s organisations are ensuring that members’ best interests will be protected at all times and the relevant processes undertaken in terms of legal process. As the process unfolds, members will be updated on any new developments and the way forward.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the relevant administrator of your organisation.
