SMART speakers: Bomb threat management protocols

Securex 2024 News & Events

Who worries about bomb threats in South Africa? Well, apparently, we should, as there are over 12,000 bomb threats each year. Naturally, the vast majority are hoaxes, but just over 6% are real bombs or various types and risks. Of those, just over 1% actually detonate. Sadly, nobody wants to talk about bombs. Who will hang out at a mall that publicises an explosion?

Kicking off day three of the Securex Seminar Theatre with a bang, SMART Security Solutions is hosting Jimmy Roodt, an explosives expert from Gauntlet Security Solutions. Roodt will speak on bomb threat protocols, the lack thereof, and why your fire emergency protocols are not an acceptable substitute (the popular SANS 10400 doesn’t cover bombs).

“The prevailing approach to bomb threat management in South Africa, as observed across sectors, including facilities management, occupational health and safety, and private security, is fundamentally flawed,” states Roodt. “The widespread practice of integrating bomb threat protocols into existing fire threat management procedures is ineffective and dangerously counterproductive.”

Join us at the Securex Seminar Theatre on 13 July at 10:00 a.m. Jimmy Roodt will explain why organisations need distinct and improved bomb threat management protocols.
