CIAS chosen for complex perimeters

Issue 8 2022 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

In Italy, the A2A Group, with 12 billion euro in revenue and 13 200 employees, manages many crucial public utilities such as energy generation, sale and distribution, district heating, waste collection and recycling, electric mobility and smart services for cities, public lighting and water supply on national level.

Over the past 4 years, the close collaboration between CIAS and A2A Smart City (the technological division of the group, dedicated to security), today manages 3000+ public and private cameras, 4100 km of optical fibre and 4000+ sensors. This makes it possible to develop perimeter protection projects with the aim of safeguarding people, corporate assets, and ensuring continuity of service for all its users.

Those critical infrastructures of national importance, such as hydroelectric and gas generation plants, transformation stations, recycling stations and waste-to-energy plants, are scattered throughout the territory. It is estimated that more than 10 km’s have been protected between fences, walls and supply pipes. The challenge is to guarantee the ROI (return on investment) based on the technological amortization of at least 10 years of service, right from the design phase.

Evolved and efficient systems

Reliable digital fuzzy Logic devices, 100% designed and built in Italy by the CIAS factory have been selected. The wide CIAS portfolio meets the complexity of irregular perimeters by offering a mix of technologies, such as ‘linear’ microwave, fence-mounted MEMS sensors and FSK radar. After such an application, no doubt is left that sophisticated electronic technologies like MEMS fence-sensors and microwave barriers, can work perfectly, even close to electrical conductors up to 150 kV.

In combination with the MICRO-RAY barrier with microwave rays, used both to defend the gates and in anti-climbing mode, the SIOUX PRO2 MEMS detection system was the product most used in the various sites to protect fences. A technical peculiarity that will certainly guarantee even longer life to the system was to lay all the MEMS cables and sensors in sturdy TAZ metal tubes and boxes to prevent damage, accidental or not.

The benefits of integration between perimeter systems

Alarm signals from CIAS digital devices can be provided in three ways: contact, RS-485 and IP, which ensures the safety of the AES128 encrypted and IEEE802.1X protected alarm data. All systems are connected with fibre optic technology, combined with IP cameras, for checking the alarms generated. This ensures that the PSIM platform offers the maximum degree of security against any intrusive attacks.

New technologies, such as the SYNAPSES self-adaptive multisensory system, will be used to integrate video systems with perimeter security devices. By correlating the RTSP video stream of the cameras already installed on the sites, with the digital sensors, sensitivity thresholds can adapt dynamically, thus improving the POD (Probability of Detection) and reducing NAR (Nuisance Alarm Rate) of the overall perimeter system.

CIAS is distributed by XtraVision.
