Milestone Community Kickstarter Contest 2021

Issue 9 2020 News & Events

Software developers will no doubt play a vital role in developing new visual technologies that can help address rapid and disruptive changes in society, the COVID-19 pandemic being the latest and perhaps most significant in recent times. With the pandemic, we’ve seen video management software and other security solutions being expanded with greater analytics and other functionalities to ensure public safety, secure buildings remotely, and check adherence to social distancing rules.

With the Milestone Community Kickstarter Contest, Milestone Systems invites developers, individuals, as well as organisations, to discover new applications and capabilities that can ‘plug in’ to the XProtect VMS product family. The winning concept can be an integration, added functionality, widget or code that extends the use of VMS in any useful capacity.

Participating developers can create a visual tool, a device trigger, or a base for analysing data, or measure information that can be applied in new ways. The two requirements are that the solution is integrated with the Milestone XProtect VMS, (possibly using the MIP SDK), and that the idea must be the contestant’s own intellectual property.

Winner 2020: “Valuable exposure and insights”

The winner of the Milestone Community Kickstarter Contest 2020 was Canscan. Canscan developed a patent pending system, based on artificial intelligence, machine vision and data analytics, that uses existing cameras and infrastructure to automatically inspect shipping containers transiting into or through terminals. Some of Canscan’s customers were already using Milestone Systems video management software, so participating in the Kickstarter contest seemed like a natural step.

“We were thrilled to have been selected as the 2020 winner at MIPS in Dallas. We have since then completed our integration with XProtect and we are happy to say that the Milestone team has been very helpful and supportive during the entire process. From both a business and a technology perspective, our ongoing relationship with Milestone has provided us with very valuable exposure, contacts and insights. We loved the experience and look forward to continuing our relationship with Milestone and its partners for many years to come,” said Jennifer Ivens, founder and CEO of Canscan.

The three finalists of the Milestone Community Kickstarter Contest 2021 will have a chance to pitch their ideas directly to the Milestone Community of partners and customers at the 2021 virtual edition of the Milestone Integration Platform Symposium (MIPS2021). The winner will be awarded $10 000 in cash and $55 000 worth of development and marketing resources or activities.

To enter the contest, developers must submit their idea by 15 December 2020.
