Integrated security defends the prosecution

Access & Identity Management Handbook 2013 Integrated Solutions

Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana, adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. It has held free and fair democratic elections since independence.

Botswana is up to 70% covered by the Kalahari Desert. It is bordered by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Its border with Zambia to the north is poorly defined but at most is a few hundred metres long. A mid-sized, landlocked country of just over two million people, Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. The country also has a strong tradition as a representative democracy.

In 2009, when a local contractor started building the new Head Office of the Botswana Department of Public Prosecution, it needed a security manufacturer that could provide a modern solution capable of delivering fire detection, access control, intrusion detection and video surveillance.

The future system had to be efficient and integrate all functions across the site. In addition to the previous demands, Botswana’s Department of Public Prosecution needed an easy to manage solution for its own security personnel. UTC Fire & Security’s experience and record of success, combined with a strong standing relationship between both parties, allowed it to win the bid and commence work on the site.

The solution

UTC Fire & Security offered Botswana’s Department of Public Prosecution a strong proposal that met their high demands. Covering intrusion detection and access control, the ATS Master solution offers not only a secure, but also a cost effective solution.

Throughout the site, over 30 detectors make sure no unwanted action or movement goes undetected. To address access control, over 30 readers have been placed at key access points throughout the site, controlled by standard badge readers.

UTC Fire & Security’s DVRs cover the video surveillance needs. Four DVR units connect close to 50 analogue cameras. Finally, the FP fire detection system is in place, connecting over 200 smoke detectors, enabling security staff to detect fires at an early stage and take necessary action.

All systems are linked to the central control room where the Alliance security management platform enables full integration between the different systems, allowing security administrators to operate, monitor and maintain the complete security suite in an easy and efficient way.
