Securex 2006

August 2006 News & Events, Transport (Industry)

Securex 2006 enjoyed another successful run for three days from 21-23 June at the Sandton Convention Centre. The exhibition was the biggest to date and attracted over 5912 visitors in two halls, an increase of 10% over last year.

Securex organiser, Exhibitions for Africa, says that 1659 of the 5912 visitors pre-registered on the Securex website, indicating that a significant amount of visitors are now utilising the Internet to register and harness the technology for convenience, and that 72% of the visitors either make or influence the purchasing decision in their company.

According to the organiser's statistics, about 64% of the visitors went to the show to seek new products, 17% to purchase products, and 50% to meet new and existing suppliers.

Over 200 exhibitors showed their products and services over the three days. One of the highlights of this year's exhibition was Reditron's Installer of the Year Competition, which offered installers the opportunity to connect and configure a variety of Reditron-supplied technologies, including CCTV cameras, digital video recorders and more, according to a predetermined specification.

There was a lot to see on the stands of local exhibiting companies, with many using the show to launch new products to the South African market. One of the solutions that really impressed was an offering from Tswelopele Engineering, which has the local distribution rights for products from Austrian company Skidata. In brief, the access control solution offers e-ticketing via cellphone; the bar coded ticket is then issued via an SMS, which then grants access through a turnstile by holding the SMS ticket in front of a reader located at the entry point to the event.

Defence Concepts SA launched an imported security window laminate, DC475, for bomb-blast protection and found the response of visitors to the stand "Very positive - as the laminate can also be offered for motor car windows as maximum protection."

CMT Trading launched the Adpro Fast TX video transmission unit as well as the Adpro presidium video motion detection system as the authorised distributors in South Africa. MD Anthony Rosenbaum says visitors showed a lot of interest as there is a need for such products on the market. "The main factor for us was the growing interest in true off-site video monitoring and the fact that many of the companies in South Africa who are interested in getting into this market have been either misinformed about the products available or sold the incorrect solution," he says.

Letlhaka Technologies is a local agent for Optelecom-NKF, and launched the MPEG-4 codec and the Pico camera kit at Securex. The company's technical director Riaan Janse Van Rensburg says he found that visitors were impressed with the high quality and low cost of the products. "The move to lower cost, more reliable video surveillance equipment, and the trend to move everything over to IP-video resulted in a lot of interest in our products," he says.

SentronicsSD showed off the NV6000-400FPS Digital Video Recorder and the CM1000 Central Monitoring and Management Suite, for which the company holds the sole import and distribution rights. Says Bernard Senekal: "We used Securex JHB to introduce our company, products and service to a wider audience and to raise awareness about our company and capabilities with the rest of the distributors in the market -these goals were certainly met!"

Securlogic was there to launch its locally designed, manufactured and supported RS1000 SMS-based building management module, which MD Paul Nagle says aroused a lot of interest as the product is unique in the industry.

PicC Electronics was another happy exhibitor. The company launched three SMS Alert products - SMS Alert 9, SMS Alert 1 and SMS Alert Plus/Alarm, all of which are developed and manufactured by the company. "We experienced a lot of interest by the exhibition visitors. They felt that there is definitely a need for our products and that it can add value to the security industry. People liked the fact that there is no monthly cost, only a once-off fee, as well as the fact that it reports to your cellphone (which everybody has). They were also impressed by the fact that our products can be connected to just about any application that requires remote control, that the user can change all the settings and number to his/her daily needs, and that one can access SMS Alert from anywhere, with one's cellphone," says Pieter Lombard.

H. Rohloff was impressed with the show. Says Jackie Rohloff, "We launched the Infracam-Thermal Imager. The technology of infrared is not well known to the general public and the show definitely created a lot of awareness. Not only was our new Infracam launched but we also wanted to introduce infrared to the security world. This is a new application in infrared and Securex was the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate this."

Nortech International launched the locally designed and manufactured Identi-Park Intelligent Parking Bay Guidance System, which is distributed both locally and internationally.

Transaction Control Technologies launched its new HPR Door (High penetration resistant), which is suitable for applications such as ATM cubicles, strong rooms, back doors to secure operations buildings, archive rooms, high value goods stores, etc, and also the new Versamaxflex model of the Selector Door. Both products are developed and manufactured by the company.

Illuder.com launched two new DVR cards, IL-4000 and IL-8001 as well as a mobile DVR, catering for the transport industry. "The hardware is imported, and the software locally developed. Hardware is developed overseas with South African conditions in mind," explains managing director Mohammad Denath. "Over and above launching the new products, Illuder.com's intention was to also create awareness of the brand and to harvest client information for future business. We did that very successfully by acquiring a couple of thousand leads."

Hyundai Telecom's full range of audio and video intercoms was launched to the local market by Raicom, who will be importing the products from Korea.

GJD Africa, a division of the UK-based company, GJD Manufacturing, had its official launch at Securex 2006. "I knew that the response would be good but it was unbelievable with so many people interested in the product and wanting to know when can they take delivery of a few samples. Some have already placed orders because they have used the product in Britain," says Sudashon Naidoo.

Elvey Security Technologies launched a huge range of new products, details of most of which were published in our Securex preview in the May issue. Elvey also won the Stand Award for Large Stands.

Emergency Reaction Services launched the MemoCam DV-58 Cell. "Visitors were excited and impressed by the new product addition to the award winning MemoCam range. The DV-58 Cell, a unique combination Digital Video Recorder, Video Motion Detector and GSM modem with off-site notification, fills a void in both covert and remote alarm systems," explains Morris Maram.

"With the recent unrest in the guarding industry and the potential rising cost of physical security, consumers are looking to electronic means of securing their businesses properly. The negligible cost of running the DV-58 Cell, combined with the added advantages it provides make it the ideal cost-effective system to either add on to existing systems or replace current security solutions."

Exhibiting as Reditron but now known as Norbain SA, the company that hosted the Installers' Competition also launched: the HeiTel - transmission and mobile products with extensive control room software; Samsung Techwin - new SNR-1650 digital recorder offering 400 fps recording speed and 2 TB internal storage; Indigo Vision - new network dome camera and video analytics, congestion detection, virtual trip wire, counter flow detection, object detection, theft detection, etc; Sony - new IP range of cameras with its control and record software; and Pelco - Endura IP-based solution.

"We had a lot of very positive response on the different IP offerings we exhibited, Indigo Vision, Pelco Endura, and Sony. With these three different products we can now offer a solution for any customer application no matter how large or small. The addition of the video analytics from Indigo Vision also provides potential customers with more management features in addition to the security surveillance," says Etienne Swanepoel, technical director.

"The product range that attracted most attention, however, was the HeiTel transmission and mobile products. The launch of these products came at the right time as many companies are looking at establishing their own video monitoring control rooms and the HeiTel product range offers a complete solution at a very competitive price.

Barry East of Impro had this to say: "Our new products, in particular Impro Vision, were very well received. The concept of single logon is picking up in South Africa and to see the concept really illustrates the benefits of such a system. In addition Impro Vision offers the user the benefit of using a number of CCTV, intrusion and fire systems brands with the integrated system allowing further flexibility to the security solution."

On the international exhibitor front companies from Russia, United Arab Emirates, China and Korea had a noticeable presence at Securex.

James Lee, sales director of first-time exhibitor Digital Home Network Systems (KOA) from Korea says, "The show is very useful. The South African market is important for us as a base for the rest of the African continent. We made a good decision to participate in the show as we have good leads from as far away as Cameroon."

Rio Mao, overseas marketing representative from Alhua Technology in China, was also happy to have made the trip to SA, "It was our first time in South Africa and it is fantastic and it is safe. We have seen some interest in our standalone Digital Video Recorder products. We are looking for distributors. South Africa is a great distribution point for the rest of Africa."
