Helping organisations comply with SANS 10400 Part T

Issue 2/3 2023 Editor's Choice

Co-located with Securex South Africa, Facilities Management Expo, and A-OSH EXPO, at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand from the 6th to 8th June, Firexpo not only provides organisations with the opportunity to see the latest technology and services in the fire detection arena, but also gives the visitors access to excellent seminar sessions at the free-to-attend Securex Seminar Theatre. Moreover, live demonstrations on the exhibitor stands allow visitors to touch, feel, and experience the products before making a purchasing decision.

It is a legal requirement in South Africa (SANS 10400) for all buildings that exceed 30 metres in height (approximately 10 floors), or contain any floor exceeding 5 000 m2, to be equipped with a fire detection system.

The system must also be designed, installed, and maintained by competent persons (SANS 10139). By investing in a fire detection system, you not only abide by the law, but can also save your organisation and employees from becoming another sad statistic.

Essentially, the legislation is concerned simply with the need for all buildings to be designed, constructed and equipped, so that in the event of fire, amongst other requirements, the people using the building will be protected – including persons with disabilities. The spread and intensity of any fire within buildings, and the spread of fire to any other buildings, should be minimised and the generation and spread of smoke should be minimised or controlled to the greatest extent reasonably practicable.

“The requirements of the Act will be deemed to have been satisfied if the design, construction, and equipment of buildings complies with SANS 10400 Part T and satisfies the local authority. Do you know if your building complies with the Act? Firexpo, now in its second year, showcases the technology and services organisations need to achieve this compliance,” says Mark Anderson, Portfolio Director at Specialised Exhibitions (a division of Montgomery Group).

“The fact that visitors can speak to the fire detection industry representatives about their exact needs, makes finding a solution that suits their specific applications so much easier. In addition, we have found at past exhibitions that visitors from the co-located shows often also find what they are wanting on the fire detection front, despite having attended the event in search of technology offered at either SECUREX, A-OSH EXPO or Facilities Management Expo,” says Anderson.

Anderson urges suppliers of fire detection and suppression products and services to book a stand at this year’s event.

“If you want to make your mark on a large portion of your target audience in a concentrated three-day period, look no further than Firexpo.”
