Open scalable solutions for logistics

Issue 6 2021 Integrated Solutions

Since the disruptions caused by unrest, the pandemic as well as numerous other factors, the logistical challenges of companies such as container terminals as well as ports are becoming more of an issue and they are looking to sophisticated solutions to address these challenges.

Factories and other facilities related to the industrial sector have also seen the need to address more tailored solutions in order to address specific needs. The continual logistical flow of traffic between terminals and factories etc. needs unified systems as an integral part of their security. ISS’s tailored made solutions, which include video management with built-in native analytics, are designed to cover critical points.

ISS customised solutions consider the specificity of the industry and the specific business processes and procedures, the infrastructure of each industrial enterprise and existing IT solutions.

ISS solutions address the multifaceted challenges of transportation security, from transportation hubs such as rail stations and airports, to logistics facilities, to intelligent roadways. The varied and unique need of each type of deployment requires the ability for the video management platforms to be adaptable and easily configurable to meet the needs of very diverse security and analytical challenges.

Implementation of video analytics solutions such as cargo and train carriage recognition, face recognition, object tracking, unidentified object detection and intelligent traffic monitoring, allow for a much more proactive solution to meet emerging threats in this critical component of the national infrastructure.

ISS’s internal native Container Recognition, Licence Plate Recognition and Train Recognition modules, which use advanced deep learning technologies along with template-based algorithms, has been successfully deployed worldwide for many years, bringing tried and tested solutions to the African continent. This along with face recognition and integration into gate access solutions, as well as IoT devices (such as those on the Sigfox Network), ensure not only the automation of entry and exit points, but also an audit trail from source to destination. The strength in ISS is built around its native and built-in analytics, as opposed to third-party addons.

Standalone systems are no longer able to address escalating needs and ISS, being a scalable technology with on-demand customisation and an open architecture, allows for customised solutions expanding laterally with IoT devices, incident management, with options of real-time dashboards, both local and cloud-based.

Areas of immediate attention include but are not limited to: effective supply chain management, (central to the success of any logistical organisation’s success), operational efficiency which includes the collection of data from numerous sources, both external and internal. This data management is crucial to managing throughput with the emphasis of improving visibility and reducing internal theft with the implementation of incident management, real-time risk management and fleet tracking between destinations.

Video surveillance, the most popular IoT use case among government organisations, with nearly half having it deployed today, can also be used to analyse traffic patterns at seaports.

With Africa on its way to being the world’s largest free trade zone and existing bottlenecks not only causing delays, but also security challenges, the need for open architecture, completely scalable solutions with on-demand customisation is opening up the flow of business Africa-wide.
