Asset and people tracking

Issue 5 2021 Surveillance

The term ‘asset and people tracking’ sounds so invasive. Who is watching us? Why are they tracking us? In the UK alone, there are over 5,2 million CCTV cameras in use. These are being used in the following sectors: local authority/council/police CCTV camera monitoring systems, corporate and business CCTV systems, home CCTV systems and even doorbell and wireless cameras. That equates to roughly one camera for every 13 people.

In South Africa, the number is nowhere near as high, but it is growing at a rapid rate. South Africans are embracing this technology and the benefits it brings to businesses and homes across the country.

With the improvement of IoT technology and access to fibre and fast streaming such as 4G/LTE, logging into these cameras to view live footage is becoming easier and more accessible for security managers, estate managers, owners of businesses and security companies.

Through the use of software, analytics and even thermal technology, cameras are better at detecting anomalies or suspicious activity than the human eye.

A popular solution, especially in perimeter security, is CCTV operating as intrusion detection and alerting the security provider of a potential threat. These cameras act like ‘beams’ by detecting movement and offering the security staff physical and visual confirmation of an intrusion. These solutions can be installed as an additional security layer to estates, office parks, strip malls and homes. PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras can be programmed to follow the movement of a person or animal and show the CCTV controller their whereabouts in real-time.

So, the people watching the cameras are protecting your family, staff and assets. They are tracking suspicious individuals that may be lurking around your home or business. They are keeping an eye on your little one’s Christmas present and making sure the courier driver gets home to his family tonight.
