Keeping unwanted vehicles at bay

Issue 5 2021 Access Control & Identity Management

Sibanye-Stillwater is a leading international precious metals mining company, with a diverse portfolio of platinum group metal (PGM) operations in southern Africa, as well as gold operations and projects in South Africa.

The high-security smelter is considered an especially sensitive hotspot and the premises required security measures that would completely discourage unlawful entry and exit. Turnstar recently supplied two of its Shield Automatic Road Blockers at the smelter premises to provide the highest levels of vehicular access control.

Craig Sacks, CEO of Turnstar, says that the 4-metre-wide blockers have a lift of 600 mm which ensures that vehicles are unable to pass over them when they are in the raised position.

Constructed from the highest quality steel, the Shield provides an impenetrable barrier that is suitable for applications requiring high levels of security. They are constructed from heavy welded steel sections to provide sufficient strength to exceed any axle loads and are designed to provide impact-resistant stoppage for vehicles.

During a typical operation, the Shield Automatic Road Blocker raises and lowers in only four to six seconds. An emergency fast operation (EFO) function is available which allows the product to be fully deployed in less than two seconds.

Designed for hostile vehicle mitigation, the Shield road blocker has an hydraulic operating cylinder concealed within the arc, ensuring maximum security. The blocker is fully galvanised to provide comprehensive corrosion protection. The front visible arc is painted black, with yellow diagonal stripes as standard and an anti-slip finish is provided for on the flat section. An ultra-bright red LED light strip is fitted to the top of the blocker arc, ensuring maximum safety and visibility for both pedestrians and vehicles. The Shield range of road blockers is available in lengths of one up to six metres and in heights of either 350, 600 or 800 mm.

All components on the Shield are designed by engineers and manufactured in Turnstar’s ISO9001-certified factory that uses the latest technology equipment to ensure longevity, durability and ruggedness.
