Containerised access control solutions at Xxaro

Issue 5 2021 Access Control & Identity Management

Situated 20 km west of Kriel in Mpumalanga, the Xxaro Matla mining complex comprises three mines that produce 14 Mtpa of power-station coal with a workforce of over 2500 permanent employees and contractors.

Matla is a fully mechanised underground mine employing continuous mining and shortwall methods. Its thermal coal is supplied to Eskom’s Matla power station and the mine has a coal reserve base of 224,3 Mt and a resource base (inclusive) of 752 Mt.

The mine complex is spread over a large area and the organisation required a satellite pedestrian entrance point and security office to monitor and control access to the premises. The solution was provided by Turnstar in the form of two portable containers of six metres and 12 metres, respectively.

Craig Sacks, CEO of Turnstar, says that the larger container hosts three double Titan full-height industrial turnstiles, together with a small security office, while the smaller container also contains a security office and three single Titan full-height industrial turnstiles. Both office areas are equipped with an air-conditioning unit to increase comfort in the extreme temperatures experienced in the region.

The refurbished shipping containers are painted in QD enamel in the colour choice of the customer and contain a single-phase 220 V distribution board complete with mains breaker, earth leakage and circuit breakers. A certificate of compliance for the electrics ensures that all wiring is according to code.

Optional extras on the containers include:

• Employee breathalyser and search areas.

• Bullet-resistant windows and walling.

• Ablutions and showers.

• Windows with burglar bars for ventilation.

• Desk and furniture for security guard to carry out his duties.

• Night time lighting.

• Lockers.

• Roller shutter doors and gas-assisted lifted entrance walls.

• Steel doors with heavy-duty lock set.

The Titan turnstiles are the ideal alternative for remote locations such as mining compounds as they are manufactured from highly durable powder coated mild steel, have case-hardened locking disks and pawls to eliminate wear and have 100% duty cycle-rated solenoids. Fitted with a self-lubricating base bearing, the turnstiles are unaffected by dust, dirt and moisture, ensuring that no routine maintenance is required. The 10-year mechanical guarantee ensures total peace of mind for the customer.
