Centralised biometric access control

City Developments Limited (CDL) is a global real estate operating company with a network spanning 103 locations in 29 countries and regions, with seven companies listed on stock exchanges in Singapore, London, New Zealand and Philippines.

Listed on the Singapore Exchange, the group is one of the largest companies by market capitalisation. Since 1960, CDL has been a well-known residential condominium development in Singapore. It is recognised for supplying diverse portfolio comprising of residences, offices, hotels, serviced apartments, integrated development and shopping malls.

Secure, easy access

CDL’s IT department has the responsibility to provide a secure but user-friendly access control system to its employees. The building’s access control points such as doors, turnstiles, parking gates and elevators were managed by RFID card readers where the system granted or denied access to employees when cards were presented to a reader.

However, CDL had deployed multiple card reader systems requiring employees to use different cards at different access points. This created entry delays due to queues formed at various entry points. Additionally, as they were dealing with an excessive number of cards, a lot of administrative work and costs were incurred, especially when cards were lost and it was necessary to delete these cards and issue new cards.

Fingerprint access control installed

Suprema’s partner in Singapore, Hanman recommended to upgrade the entire system with Suprema’s access control products and to replace the use of cards with fingerprint biometrics. The system revolves around the CoreStation, Suprema’s intelligent control panel. There are a total of 10 CoreStations installed inside of the main server room and connected to 50 BioEntry W2 fingerprint readers. BioEntry W2’s performance of 150 000 matches per second and IP67/IK09 compliant housing makes it suitable for all entrances and doors in any environment. In addition, 9 OM-120 multiple output expansion modules are installed in 9 different lifts, each with BioEntry W2 fingerprint readers to control access to different floors in the building.

The entire system is operated seamlessly through Suprema’s BioStar 2 access control platform. The new system offers a solution that is far more convenient and secure over the previous RFID system and has led to greater customer satisfaction.

Key benefits

Easy to use: Not having to carry cards greatly increases convenience for employees. At the same time, the use of fingerprints enhances security as credentials are impossible to share.

Faster processing time: CoreStation’s performance of 400 000 matches/sec and extended user capacity offers speeds that exceeds normal card readers.
