Residential Estate Security Conference 2019: In-house or outsourced?

The Residential Estate Security Conference 2019 will be held on 20 August 2019, once again at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways, Johannesburg. This year will see a variety of specialists addressing various aspects of estate security, from manned guarding through to technology, the integration of the two, as well as the ways in which artificial intelligence can enhance your security without costing a fortune.

One of the biggest complaints people have about security is the human factor. Guards are blamed for every failure of estate security and they are usually the last people to be believed in case of an argument. At the same time, however, nobody wants to get rid of their guards, simply seeing the person patrolling gives people a sense of security.

While South Africa’s guards are often criticised, the same people who cry foul about guards are the same ones who won’t pay them a decent salary or ensure they have provident funds. And this unethical behaviour extends from the end user to some of the guarding companies themselves.

Tony Botes has been in the South African security industry for many years and as the SASA administrator he is at the coal face of the guarding industry. He will deliver a presentation at the Residential Estate Security Conference looking at how the guarding industry is changing, how ‘rogue’ employers are being tackled by various government departments. Moreover, he will look at the potential liabilities end users (the customer) faces if they don’t ensure their service provider is registered and compliant with all the regulatory requirements in terms of guards.

He will also address the concept of in-house guards. Some estates look to hire their own guards as a way to cut costs and have a more focused and (hopefully) loyal guarding workforce.
