Complete active tagging solution

February 2002 News & Events

Software development company, Trac-Ware has announced a partnership agreement with Wavetrend Technologies for the development of solutions that integrate active RFID (Radio Frequency ID) tagging into passive tagging legacy solutions, access control, biometrics and facilities management.

Wavetrend is a global corporation specialising in research and development of a technology platform that provides active, realtime wireless identification of physical assets, people and intellectual property. Its wireless identification platform combines RFID with a network of transmitters and receivers that can be used as personnel identification cards, location identifiers and asset tags. All tags communicate actively - meaning in a consistent, continuous and secure manner - whether the receiver network is deployed throughout a building or a corporate campus.

"As a Wavetrend integrator, Trac-Ware is providing the Tag-Trac solution that brings the software and system integration component to Wavetrend's wireless identification platform for realtime control systems in asset management, access control, personnel monitoring, PC access control, data protection and IT infrastructure management," says John Harris, MD of Trac-Ware.

"Traditionally, access control or any tracking and identification of assets for that matter, has been done with bar codes or passive/proximity type smartcards. This has been the standard, but we are seeing a shift away from passive to active devices that can be read over a distance," says Fernando de Sousa, Chief Technology Officer at Wavetrend Technologies.

"There are essentially two areas of growth in the South African market. The first is the tagging and monitoring of high-worth assets, such as PCs and monitors as well as the intellectual property and data on PC hard drives and, the second, productivity management, which typically includes knowing people's location or movements, as well as ensuring that time, space or people are better employed. As the technology is active, it does not rely on someone to actually do anything, which rules out the element of human error or need for policies which are always difficult to enforce," he adds.
