Automatic access at Lanseria

August 2017 Access Control & Identity Management

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems’ automatic entrance and exit solutions facilitate passage at Lanseria International Airport’s international departures terminal as well as to offices at the facility.

First established in 1974 and located North of Johannesburg, Lanseria is South Africa’s only privately-owned international airport and the only other internationally accredited airport in Gauteng. Following a number of expansions and upgrades, including a R150 million project to construct a new runway to accommodate larger aircraft, the airport is today a key player in the aviation sector offering daily commercial flights on top airlines between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and George. A number of leading charter companies also operate from the airport.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems received orders for the supply and installation of two automatic door systems at the airport during 2016. The first, a Besam SL500 single entrance and exit door, was installed at Lanseria’s international departure terminal in Q2 2016. With the assistance of installation partner, Alufast Glass & Aluminium, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems installed a second system, a Besam bi-parting SL500 sliding door mechanism, at the airport’s offices in Q4 2016.

An automatic door is only open when in use and closed doors save energy. By reducing the energy consumption of the airport terminal’s air-conditioning system, the effective operation of automatic doors help to optimise the overall efficiency of the building. In addition, by maintaining the air-conditioned atmosphere through controlling air infiltration, reducing heating and cooling loss and keeping out wind, dust, heat, cold and insects, the doors create a comfortable internal environment for travellers, visitors and airport staff. The Besam solution includes directional sensors that close doors faster within ANSI standards to further reduce air infiltration loss. All sliding door operators are linked to fire alarm systems to ensure safe, easy and fast evacuation from the terminal and office area. Automatic doors are extremely hygienic since there is no need for users to touch doors or handles.
