Access control system for Iscor Vanderbijlpark Works

December 2001 Access Control & Identity Management

AST and technology partners Honeywell Southern Africa, have designed, supplied, installed and commissioned an access control and security system for Iscor's Vanderbijlpark works. Installed in Iscor's Flat Steel Products Plant for the monitoring of vehicles, trucks and approximately 15 000 personnel and contractors, the system is from the Honeywell WSE range which features advanced digital proximity technology that will enable the access cards to be used for time and attendance purposes - an additional system which is to be added in a second phase of the project.

The system includes an integrated photo ID system, all of which are on a dual redundant server on fibre-optic LAN with some 20 rotary stations situated throughout the works. The system utilises the latest enterprise building integration (EBI) software from Honeywell and took just over four months to install and commission. The total installation and commissioning exercise was undertaken by AST.

According to Ben van der Bank of AST, Iscor's previous access control and security system was somewhat outdated and needed to be replaced with a system that would be compliant with the national key point regulations. "With the large number of contractors and people through Iscor's gates on a daily basis, it is imperative that the plant be protected with the latest technology, to ensure both the safety and security of personnel and equipment", states van der Bank.

Comprising controllers, proximity readers, digital cards and the EBI open integrated enterprise architecture, the system provides Iscor with a single source, one-window control and monitoring of access, security, life safety, records and databases. HVAC, lighting and energy control can be added as options. The Honeywell Security Manager provides centralised alarming, cardholder management and the ability to acquire and use data from human resource databases. The security application has comprehensive reporting capabilities, with preconfigured standard reports and the ability to create reports customised to Iscor's specific needs.
