Based on the success of installations at the California Youth Authority (CYA) facilities, Identix fingerscan readers and software will be implemented at 16 Californian Department of Corrections prison facilities.
"An incident at CYA several years back forced them to look at how they tracked employees as they entered and exited the secured perimeters of the facilities," explains Bill Spence, Identix Vice President, BioSecurity Physical Access Control. "They didn't have an adequate system in place. Employees simply showed their badges as they walked in and out. It was then that they looked to Identix. Based on the irrefutability of biometrics as a means of verifying individuals, they asked us to provide a solution similar to the successful implementations at CYA."
Employees at Californian correctional facilities will have their fingers scanned as they enter and exit the facilities. Each worker will have a defined time zone schedule, based on the hours they work. Should the employee not exit at the designated time, a report and visible alarm are generated, alerting his/her superior that the employee remains on site.
"They have had a positive reaction from all employees at the pilot sites," continues Spence. "They understand the system is in place for their protection and they are grateful for it."
