Master Power open day

June 2015 News & Events

Master Power Technologies (MPT) recently held an open day to demonstrate its power management solutions aimed at the enterprise market. The company has made a name for itself in the power market, providing independent power solutions to many local and African companies.

The company started out providing UPS systems and soon migrated to generators and rotary power systems, and is now also supplying gas-powered solutions. MPT has formed partnerships with a host of the leading global power companies, including Schneider Electric, Emerson, Hitec, MTU etc. It develops power management solutions at its warehouse in Randburg, combining its own technology with solutions from these partners. Some of its clients include well-known names such as MTN, Vodacom, ABSA, Nampak and more.

One of its deliverables into Africa and locally is self-contained multi-storey power containers. These containers include generators, UPSs, the electronic and safety components, as well as diesel tanks. They are designed and built in MPT’s warehouse, before being shipped to the customer.

MPT spends considerable resources on research and development, with its UC – one of its home-grown technologies – proving a hit with customers. This solution is its Universal Controller (UC). The UC is designed to allow companies to keep an eye on all the components of their power solution to pre-empt any problems and make sure the business never has any unexpected breakdowns.

The UC monitors the batteries and switching gear, among other components, keeping track of, for example, current, voltage and temperature. Companies can monitor and manage their own systems, or link the UC to MPT’s cloud-based monitoring system LifeNet, where they are monitored by MPT. Using the UC, users can ensure they replace faulty components before they fail and that their systems are always ready to perform the tasks they were designed to – which is important in an environment of uncertain electrical supply.

When the UC detects a problem, LifeNet warns relevant parties that something needs attention through an SMS or email message. This ensures MPT can send the right technician with the right spares to resolve the issue quickly.

A new area MPT is entering is the solar power generation market. Many companies are looking for solar alternatives to keep their basic systems going when suffering an Eskom blackout, or to ease the load on the grid by self-provisioning a portion of their electricity requirements. MPT is still testing and vetting various solar options in order to be able to offer customers a reliable solution that the company can maintain and support effectively.

Another growth area is sub-Saharan Africa, where the company has made inroads into a few markets and is looking at expanding its scope. It already has a presence in Tanzania and Kenya, with partners in other regions. Master Power currently focuses on the telecoms market and has gained experience in keeping data centres of all sizes running, and is starting to make inroads into the mining industry as well.
