Honeywell announces Fingerscan biometric ID system

November '99 Access Control & Identity Management

Honeywell has announced the addition to its product range of FingerScan, a unique new system that uses electronic fingerprinting to prove identity. The system is ideal for use in access control as well as time and attendance applications.

FingerScan uses biometrics to verify a user's identity by electronically reading, analysing and comparing the user's live finger image with a previously recorded template of the same finger which has been stored in the database. Biometrics refers to the use of some unique biological characteristic to verify an individual's identity.

Said Lui Wing Sin, Director of Marketing for Honeywell Southeast Asia: "The real benefit of this system is that it is extremely accurate. When FingerScan is used to control access into a building, the system virtually eliminates the possibility of illegal entry, as only the person whose finger matches that on the template will be allowed entry." Unlike conventional systems which rely on something a person has in his possession - a key, ID card or similar - or something a person knows - a password or security code, for example, FingerScan eliminates the possibility of lost keys or cards or the unlawful disclosure of security codes.

"Used as a time and attendance tool, FingerScan can help organisations achieve significant payroll savings in two main areas," said Lui. "Number one, it ensures that em-ployees work the hours they previously may only have claimed to work. FingerScan puts an end to 'buddy-punching,' where an employee might punch in for a colleague who is late. Secondly, it eliminates false overtime claims, as the system is accurate to the second."

FingerScan can also help an organisation reduce administrative costs, as it eliminates the costs associated with replacing lost keys or cards.

Other benefits of FingerScan include:

p FingerScan leaves an irrefutable audit trail of who did what and when.

p It is easy to use, as there are no keys or cards to carry around and no codes or passwords to remember.

p FingerScan is flexible and suitable for a variety of control applications. It can be installed as a standalone unit or networked and it can be integrated with an existing card key system.
