Callguard security wins jewel of a contract worth R8 million

November '99 News & Events

One of South Africa's leading security com-panies, Callguard Security Services has been awarded an R8 million per annum tender by the state-owned Alexkor mine, one of the largest security tenders awarded in recent months. This follows shortly after the announcement that Kagiso Ventures - the private equity arm of Kagiso Trust Investment Company (KTI) had purchased a 33,75% stake in the highly successful security company.

Says Dave Lyons, Founder and Executive Chairman of Callguard Security Services, "The Alexkor mine, a diamond mine in Alexander Bay, is a prestige contract to have won. The BEE partnership which we struck with Kagiso Ventures has already opened new markets to Callguard Security. In addition, Kagiso Ventures has contributed strategic support at board level."

Lyons says that Callguard has the resources and the know-how to provide a total integrated security solution of the highest calibre to the mine which, as a result of the nature of its business, demands security of the highest standards.

Using our national infrastructure and resources, we were able to establish a fully constituted branch in just two weeks, including vehicles, accommodation, logistics as well as the deployment of trained staff from our national database. This is in line with our strategy to ensure that clients are served by a branch in close proximity.

Says Shathi Govender, Alexkor mine General Manager; finance and administration, "We opted for Callguard as their approach is extremely professional and although they are well established, they are a young and dynamic team which fits the bill in the new South Africa.

"Further factors in Callguard's favour was its integrated business approach with decentralised business units and management ownership of the business through an employee shareholder scheme."

The Callguard group, which has an annual turnover of almost R120 million and a predominately blue-chip client base, consists of five companies operating in the areas of guarding, electronic surveillance and access control, forensic investigations and training.

The company has approximately 700 contracts, 4000 employees and a nationwide infrastructure of 17 branches which enables it to provide clients with fully integrated solutions to meet their security requirements.
