Morpho South Africa adopts a school

April 2013 News & Events

Morpho South africa has embarked on a community upliftment project as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative. Zanempucuko Secondary School (ZSS) has been selected as the beneficiary of this project. The school is based in a rural part of the Eastern Cape, and boasts a 91% matric pass rate despite the various difficulties faced by the school and learners. One of the major challenges faced by the school is overcrowded classes. The school has 810 learners and classrooms house up to 60 learners per class.

The project will run over a five-year period and aims to contribute to the improvement of the academic, infrastructural, social and security environment of the school and its learners to ensure that ZSS is an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. The nature of the project will also guarantee the direct involvement of the local community and provide employment opportunities.

With the financial backing of Morpho the project team aims to:

* build 10 classrooms;

* upgrade kitchen and feeding facilities;

* upgrade the ablution facilities;

* build sporting facilities;

* build a perimeter fence; and

* build an administration office block.

Thus far a perimeter fence has been erected and four new classrooms have been built. The new classrooms will ease the overcrowding and the perimeter fence will ensure the safety of learners while at school. According to Andrew Mackenzie, project leader: “there have been delays in the construction of the classrooms due to the heavy rains in the area and the truck driver strike late last year”.

The school has now also begun a subsistence farming project which is run by the school staff and will help with the school’s feeding scheme. The decision to adopt ZSS was not an easy one as the need in the Eastern Cape is great. The official inauguration of the four new classrooms took place during February. The project will improve the lives and learning conditions of many students which will in turn bear fruits for many years to come.
