Proactive electronic guarding system

With the high cost of top-end systems as well as streaming and bandwidth challenges in South Africa, creative solutions are always welcomed. According to Andrew Page Wood of VideoIQ Africa, the company’s Rialto system addresses and solves the problems associated with CCTV and IP limitations.

“We have taken VideoIQ’s high-end technology and incorporated it into a boxed solution to plug into any CCTV system, bridging the world of analogue and IP. By teaching the system to detect specific, predetermined behaviour and events and react intelligently to them, we are able to provide the market with a truly proactive electronic guarding system that is affordable,” said Page Wood.

The Rialto Analytics Bridge, which provides up to two weeks’ worth of onboard recorded surveillance footage, merges the world of security guarding with high-tech surveillance technology. By instructing the system to react predictively, VideoIQ’s Rialto provides automatic alerts before events have even happened.

Bandwidth friendly

Page Wood explained that, because the system only uses bandwidth when it predicts and reports on exceptions to acceptable behaviour, bandwidth and monitoring costs are kept low.

The Rialto’s analytics software differentiates between a person, a vehicle and other objects that the camera is seeing. Each individual object under surveillance is framed with a specifically coloured frame to discriminate them, allowing the system to react appropriately.

“There are a number of actions which can be programmed into the system, giving each camera a real job to do. Along with the rules set, these can include audible alarms; activation of lights; and alerts sent to armed response company, SAPS or the property owner with a video clip detailing the event, over almost any connection,” said Page Wood.

Analytics that works

Video analytics is fast gaining popularity as a crime prevention tool and achieves maximal use in the Rialto. “VideoIQ wanted to develop a system that was easy to use but extremely smart. The video analytics are self-calibrating and the system requires very little skill and no special training to set up and install,” according to Page Wood.

This plug-and-play device can contain up to four cameras and allows the user to add analytics, remote guarding and alarm inputs. In addition, the solid state construction means that maintenance is kept to a minimum due to the absence of moving parts. The Rialto is designed to work with any camera type: fixed, PTZ or thermal.

Previously only affordable for high-end and upmarket installations, the most recent version of the Rialto has been re-engineered to dramatically reduce costs. “We believe that such intuitive and value-added technology deserves to be available to the mass market. The latest version is finding a growing fan base in small to medium businesses, light industry, commercial and retail applications as well as private homes and estates,” added Page Wood.

The Rialto is easy to configure and provides the user with reduced operational costs, since the software is provided at no charge, with no licences required.
