Honeywell to upgrade SA military hospital

May 2012 Integrated Solutions

Honeywell Building Solutions (HBS) has been awarded the contract to upgrade the South African Military Health Services (SAMHS) facility in Pretoria. Honeywell’s Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI) was chosen due to the fact that the EBI technology is the only technology available that offers all required solutions on one platform.

HBS senior account manager, Kevin Pearman said, “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract by SAMHS and the installation of the EBI technology will commence shortly. The SAMHS site is a complex site in as much that it contains more than just medical supplies. One of the requirements was for a more progressive monitoring and access system in order to combat theft and unauthorised access. Once presented with the vast range of applications that our EBI has to offer, all from one integrated platform, SAMHS included functions such as fire alarm systems; access control; intruder alarms, gas alarms, general UPS, HVAC, irrigation, building management and video surveillance solutions to the menu of requirements.

“After visiting our demonstration facility here in Midrand, which displayed how the EBI solutions can be accommodated from one integrated common platform embracing existing networks and systems, SAMHS asked us to demonstrate how the system could be accommodated within their environment, which we did. With some adjustments being made in order to tailor the systems to SAMHS requirements the EBI system showed quite clearly how it could offer a cost effective open platform enabling all installed technologies to communicate with each other.”

Colonel Gideon Odendaal from SAMHS said, “Our facility here in Pretoria had quite old and outdated systems. As a result of the tender process, I believe that HBS offered us the most progressive and competitive solution from finance through to network integration and training of our manpower. The ability to fully integrate with our sub-systems was crucial. Security was obviously a top priority for us at SAMHS and we had a requirement for over 500 cameras and associated networks. We also needed to address our energy saving requirements in the most cost effective and environmentally friendly manner. HBS offered us one of the most technologically advanced integrated solutions at a very competitive price. Their professional interaction with SAMHS is testament to how they believe in developing their customer relations in addition to the benefit of having HBS involved in the on-going maintenance and updating of the EBI system.”

The EBI system offers a comprehensive automation of all building systems – without the customer having to start over. It uses open architecture coupled with industry standards and can be customised to meet the needs of practically any facility. The EBI also offers technology that creates the ability for the customer to make more informed decision making due to the advanced data mining and integration with enterprise databases. In addition, it gives improved operator control with an easy web-based user interface, which also reduces training time.

The EBI Suite offers integrated control over every key management area such as:

* HVAC, lighting, electrical equipment.

* Access and security systems.

* Building safety, asset protection and personnel protection.

* Digital video surveillance which includes tracking and monitoring of physical assets and personnel.

* Energy managements across the entire enterprise offering a four star green rating.
