Flying past fire

May 2011 Fire & Safety

Aspirating smoke detection system provides early fire detection for baggage handling, retail and check-in areas.

Xtralis announced that its VESDA very early warning aspirating smoke detection (ASD) system has been deployed to protect business continuity at Delhi Airport Terminal 3.

The state-of-the-art air transportation hub has the capacity to handle 34 million passengers annually. With eight levels 28 metres above the ground laid over four square kilometres, the terminal boasts more than 90 automated walkways and 78 aerobridges. It is rated as the eighth largest airport in the world and the largest public building constructed in India since independence.

VESDA by Xtralis was specified for Delhi Airport Terminal 3 because of its advantages in protecting large, open spaces where smoke will be diluted, an effect compounded by air-conditioning systems.

VESDA continuously samples air to detect even the smallest smoke particles, thus preventing a small fire from becoming a major incident. VESDA buys time to investigate an alarm and initiate an appropriate response to prevent injury, property damage or business disruption.

And because VESDA detectors are highly sensitive and their pipe networks, which have multiple sampling points, can be placed where smoke is most likely to travel, they excel at detecting diluted smoke – unlike conventional point and beam detectors.
