Turnstiles for the Qatar fuel additives company

October 2010 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

Qatar Fuel Additives Company (QAFAC), a subsidiary of Qatar Petroleum, was established as a Qatari joint stock company to build, own and operate facilities at Mesaieed in Qatar for the production of methanol and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) for sale to customers worldwide.

Qafac required turnstiles to control employee access to the secure facility. The turnstiles act as a physical security barrier to the site and also as a safety barrier to prevent unauthorised persons from entering restricted areas.

A requirement for the turnstiles was that they had to be able to withstand not only the severe conditions that come with petrochemical operations, but to also withstand the extremely harsh conditions of the Qatari desert environment. The turnstiles are regularly exposed to temperatures of over 45°C and to tons of windblown, fine desert sand.

Turnstar’s ROTALOK with rotation locking mechanism was selected as it can operate in dusty conditions. The product undergoes various manufacturing processes in order to prevent wear on moving parts while the turnstile is in service.

In April 2009, four TITAN 3 full height turnstiles were installed at QAFAC. So successful was the installation that in April 2010, another 16 TITAN 3 full height turnstiles were installed. The turnstiles were manufactured from powder coated mild steel and were fitted by Turnstar with additional LED indicator lights for ease of use.
