Simple citizen fingerprinting

January 2010 Access Control & Identity Management

The use of biometrics in government is becoming increasingly necessary to ensure the safety of citizens and to prevent identity theft leading to the abuse of rights.

There is a growing need in government for advanced desktop and portable devices aimed at simplifying the process of collecting biographic and biometric information and verifying people’s identity.

The latest release in the Futronic fingerprint reader range is the FS50, a professional scanner capable of single finger, dual finger and roll finger imaging making it ideal for government applications. Futronic is supported locally by Brand New Technologies.

According to Dave Crawshay-Hall, CTO at Brand New, the FS50 is appropriate for government applications that require easy enrolment and capture of fingerprints for citizen identification and verification. “The FS50 uses an advanced optical system to capture high quality images in 0,1 second. It is also able to capture problem fingers that may be wet, too dry or scarred.

“Despite being lightweight and portable, the FS50 is suitable for use in almost environment. The unit has a scratch resistant coating on the scanning surface, making it robust and ready for long term heavy duty usage.”

A unique serial number is factory-programmed into the USB Device Descriptor of each FS50. This serial number means each scanner can be traced, a valuable benefit for government identity management projects such as criminal identification, national ID and voter registration. The scanner has also been certified by the FBI as compliant with PIV-071006 Image Quality Specification for Single Finger Readers.

To allow customisation and integration of the unit into devices like handheld ID verification machines and portable voter registration stations, Futronic has released the FS51 OEM module. This offers all the features of the FS50 but comes without the plastic casing or USB cable.

Other Specifications of the FS50:

* Image resolution is 800 x 750 pixel, 500 dpi.

* Infrared LED light source.

* Fingerprint image size is 600 KB.

* USB2.0 compatible interface, plug-and-play.

* Operation temperature: -10 to +55°C.

* Size: 110x100x45 mm.

* Weight 460 g with USB cable.
