Wits University

July 2006 Access Control & Identity Management

Limtech Biometric Solutions was approached to provide seven clocking points for the computer science department, one clocking point as well as four CCTV cameras and a DVR for the statistics - sales and marketing department and one clocking point for the populations demographics department. The university required the solution to be cost effective, at the same time providing enhanced system benefits over the existing system to satisfy the customer expectations.

Wits was experiencing theft of computer equipment from various departments. The university had limited access control with Digipads and magnetic swipe card readers, controlling access to certain areas, with limited network functionality, that needed to be upgraded. There were also concerns over staff using the new proposed advanced technology and system education. What was needed was central network administration, but localised departmental control of the access control system. Access granted by the Digipads and magnetic swipe cards was unreliable as pin codes and cards could be swapped between users and it was found that students had the ability to swipe a magnetic card and let other students through the door with them.

Limtech did a full on-site evaluation of the current set up and made the following recommendations and system implementations:

* Biometric fingerprint clocking points would provide authentic staff clocking and produce accurate log data for reporting on restricted entry/exit.

* The FG70 clocking system was recommended for easy clocking of employees and assisting with the system education concerns.

The FG70 has a programmable voice interface available in any language to assist staff while clocking.

The user fingerprint is displayed on the screen showing whether the fingerprint placement is correct or perhaps too high or too low.

Visual LED indicators and audible sounds also provide user assistance for successful or unsuccessful clockings.

The FG70 caters for 1:Many, 1:1 or 1:Group Identification, meaning employees could now just walk up to the reader, and place their finger without having to enter any pin codes.

* The FG70 clocking system has a programmable IP address onboard each clocking station, allowing the simple plug in of each unit to a network point and simply addressing each unit, on the network via the software, providing a complete networked solution. Wits IT department assigned Limtech an IP range on their network that, together with assistance from their IT manager, ensured a smooth integration with no impact on the existing network.

* The CCTV cameras with digital video recording provides surveillance over the biometric readers to record footage in the event that students who clock in may let others through with them. The Biometrics-CCTV combination provides video footage coupled with authentic clocking data, providing enhanced security in combating crime.
