Diamonds are forever

December 2004 Access Control & Identity Management

Since its creation in 2001, Ideco Technologies has been distributing Sagem biometric technology throughout South Africa and in the southern African region. Sagem fingerprint technology serves the international market in both the criminal and civil fields, and is in use in a large variety of environments. No less than 1,5 billion fingerprints worldwide have been enrolled onto Sagem systems.

Some of the larger Sagem clients are the FBI, Interpol and the United Nations. In South Africa, our references include the South African Police Service and the Department of Home Affairs; Sagem technology is also used by the Department of Transport for the driver's licence and by Social Development to pay some 3-million pensions and other grants every month.

Through Business Connexion, Sagem biometric technology and Lavie TimeTECH were recently awarded the account for Lev Leviev Diamonds also known as LLD Diamonds.

LLD Diamonds, headquartered in Israel at the Ramat Gan Diamond Exchange, is the world's only diamond manufacturer that controls its own diamond mines.

With over 1000 employees LLD Windhoek is the biggest cutting and polishing plant in Africa, and one of the largest in the world.

Due to the nature of LLD's operations, a secure, proven and reliable means of controlling access to, and managing the attendance of staff at its Namibian plant, was sought. Sagem biometric products provided LLD with a means of quickly and positively identifying employees and visitors at various stages in their operation. An operation handling such a large volume of high value goods cannot afford to incur losses due to fraudulent entry and theft.

Of equal importance to LLD in handling a large workforce, was the ability to pay their staff accurately and fairly, according to actual hours worked. Again, Sagem biometric readers are able to eliminate the possibility of buddy-clocking, ensuring that the data that enters the T&A system is of the highest possible integrity. Many companies experience between 15 and 30% reductions in general and overtime wages, as a result of implementing a biometric-based T&A system.

LLD selected the Sagem Morpho Enrolment and Management System (MEMS) to capture and manage the demographic and biometric data of its employees. The Sagem MorphoAccess range of terminals was selected to perform the functions of access control and recording T&A transactions. The MorphoAccess terminals are capable of storing fingerprint records of up to 48 000 persons, and perform identification (1:MANY) in (1 second (MA200).
