A barrier that won't spoil the view.

June '99 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

An invisible barrier, easy to erect and delivering a very low probability of false alarms are a few of the benefits which are luring many farmers, home owners and businessmen to protect their properties with perimeter beams.

Securing the first line of defense, the perimeter, is invaluable when preventing surprise attacks. The traditional perimeter protection offered by high security walls, electric fencing or barbed wire acts as deterrent to many intruders, and beams are ideal to complement these perimeter protection methods, and in certain instances, even offer a stand-alone alternative.

Typically the beams are installed above a wall or fence, which makes it virtually impossible to cross the perimeter without being detected. The mere sight of the beams (referring here to the transmitter and receiver units, not the invisible light beams themselves) is usually a sufficient deterrent to would-be intruders.

Another option is covert use within the premises, for instances where the beams are hidden away within the garden, yard, warehouse, etc. Provided there is a direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver, they may be hidden behind bushes or other obstructions. The intruder triggers the beam without even being aware of its existence. Efficiency of the beams of course depends on the alarm or monitoring station to which they are connected.

The advent of dual beams virtually eliminated the critical shortcoming of a single beam, an unacceptable number of false alarms, caused by insects, small birds, falling leaves, etc. Instead of only one transmitter and one receiver, a dual beam has two of each, and an alarm is only generated when both beams are simultaneously broken.

In comparison with other perimeter devices, dual beams probably offer the best combination of easy installation and reliable, maintenance free operation.
