ADT Fire secures a first in the marine industry

ADT Security was recently commissioned to design, supply and commission state-of-the-art Novec 1230 fire extinguishing systems on three inshore fishery and environmental inspection vessels belonging to the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

The three ships, which are being built by Farocean Marine, have each been fitted with 180-litre Novec 1230 cylinders fire extinguishing systems. Several marine regulatory bodies list these Novec systems as the preferred fire fighting method for marine applications."

Novec is environmentally friendly as it breaks down into its primary constituents within five days while its closest competitor takes more than 30 years to break down," says Hennie Barnard, general manager of ADT Fire Systems, adding that the contract included the design of the system and piping, which had to be specially engineered to meet the stringent marine specifications.

According to Barnard, Novec 1230 is a halon replacement, which, in addition to having a short atmospheric lifetime, has no global warming effect. "Novec 1230 is safe, environmentally friendly and widely recognised as the best option available in any situation, which could prove unstable," he says.
