UK firm links to crime-fighting software

May 2004 Integrated Solutions

Every day, burglaries, car thefts, assaults and other more serious crimes such as armed robberies, drug trafficking and gang-related offences often go unsolved despite the best efforts of law enforcement. But all that could change in the UK with Coplink - Knowledge Computing Corporation's critically acclaimed crime-fighting tool that is now available to British law-enforcement agencies.

Orbitron Technologies - a leader in software development and systems integration, and based in Manchester, north-west England - is to serve as Knowledge Computing Corporation's first international distribution partner. The agreement represents the US company's first entry into internatonal markets.

"Improving community safety and providing law enforcement with tools that help keep more public safety officers on the streets to solve crime is a universal priority," says Bob Griffin, chief executive officer of Knowledge Computing. "Unlike other solutions, Coplink is economical and scalable and will not require massive government subsidies to implement nationwide. Orbitron Technologies' expertise and scope in the field makes them an ideal partner for advancing our international expansion strategy," he added.

Identifying suspects, relationships and hidden patterns

Coplink provides unparalleled analysis and decision support for rapidly identifying criminal suspects, relationships and hidden patterns that can help solve and prevent crime. The solution is also promising for use in prevention of domestic terrorism.

The system works by allowing vast quantities of structured and seemingly unrelated data, currently housed in incompatible computer-based record management systems (RMS), to be organised under a single, highly secure intranet-based platform.

One search using known facts from a 'live' criminal investigation can produce qualified leads in just minutes - a process that, prior to Coplink, often took days or weeks of intensive police work.

"Through sophisticated analysis, Coplink builds 'institutional memory', reduces knowledge gaps and prevents criminals from 'falling through the cracks'. It saves time, improves efficiency, reduces expensive resource costs and allows staff to spend more time preventing crime because Coplink helps solve crimes faster," says a spokesman.

"Sharing information and intelligence data among police forces throughout the UK is essential to solving crime and improving community safety but this is often hindered by inadequate technology," says Paul Birchall, Orbitron's chief executive officer.

"Coplink generates qualified leads where there are none and can help put criminals hiding under the radar behind bars. With Coplink, Orbitron is able to provide a new, intelligent and powerful solution to help all police officers significantly improve crime detection in every area," he adds. Designed by former law-enforcement officials, Coplink is tactically sophisticated yet user-friendly. Even the most non-technical law-enforcement officials can master it in less than a day ( www.knowledgecc.com or www.coplink.net).
