Motorola has launched a range of low-cost two-way radios. The Alpha series P020 and P030 radios come with the flexibility of front panel programming, fully adjustable power and selective call. Suitable for a wide range of operations, the Alpha series radios are underpinned by Motorola's technology and quality guarantees. According to Ian Bayly, product marketing manager at Motorola, the Alpha Series is the result of extensive research and consultation with a wide range of customers worldwide.

"Feedback from our business users in services, industry and trade indicated the need for easy-to-use, lightweight yet rugged, efficient and low-cost radios. While affordability was a key focus, we have also included the full range of features which our customers expect along with ergonomic design, usability and reliability," says Bayly.

Available in VHF and UHF, the Alpha series comprises the P020 (a reduced keypad version) for general users and the P030 (a fully programmable keypad version) for those with more sophisticated requirements. The P030 also allows for 99 different talk group channels (and 128 private lines), support for selective call DTMF signalling, user-customised speed dials, prime channel and priority scan. Motorola original batteries allow for up to eight hours of talk time (assuming 5% of time transmit, 5% receive and 90% standby). "Battery power can also be extended by up to four hours more by the 'talkaround' function that only uses a repeater when necessary and battery saver mode when users are in close proximity," notes Bayly.

Usability is also enhanced through alphanumeric and iconic displays which include battery and signal strength indicators, and text and number displays such as channel number and alias for enhanced user experience. Additional features comprise busy channel lockout, nuisance channel delete, backlight, receive-only channel and predefined time-out timer.
