IBM endorses security technology conference, 29 January 2004

November 2003 News & Events, Logistics (Industry)

An exciting new security event - the IP Convergence Conference - has been launched by IP Security Events and Media with something of a coup: it has been sponsored by the prestigious IBM. Gail Whipple, IBM global services vice president for digital media, will be opening the conference with a keynote address, presenting IBM's future IT strategy for security-based applications.

The one-day conference, which takes place on 29 January 2004 at Stoneleigh Park near Coventry as part of IIPSEC (International Internet Protocol Security Exhibition and Conference), has been established to explore the technology roadmap for electronic security systems and addresses the challenges that both end-users and solution providers have when migrating electronic security and building management systems on to one single network.

The conference will deliver an interactive programme throughout the day as experts from electronic security and intelligent building solutions at the cutting edge of IP technology address key topics and issues. Some of the topics to be covered will include:

* Current market structure and purchase channels.

* The weakness of today's systems.

* The move from analog to digital.

* Web services and UpnP.

* Cost of ownership and financial considerations.

* Legislation and standards.

* Future innovations and scenarios.

The idea for the conference was born out of a demand for more information on the benefits of IP in security, as Paul Hennings, director of IP Security Events & Media, explains: "Since the advent of the Internet and the emergence of low cost networking solutions, organisations of all types have realised that they have to fundamentally change the way they service their business needs. Convergence is at the heart of this change and offers huge cost savings and system flexibility.

"But how do organisations go about this convergence process. What are the challenges they face and the pitfalls to avoid? How can they get a decent return on their investment? Who maintains the system? What standards should they be working to? There are so many questions that remain unanswered. The IP Convergence Conference is an attempt to clarify some of these issues and help shape the future."
