Active IR dual beam

August 2003 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

The Peritec active infrared dual beam operates by sending multiple constant low energy beams between transmitter and receiver units. When the beams are broken, there is a voltage drop, which triggers a relay then sending a signal to the alarm control panel.

The stability in the Peritec beams comes from the fact that there are two infrared beams transmitting and receiving which have to be broken simultaneously. With the beams being 16 cm apart, it is not possible for a leaf or debris from a windstorm to break both simultaneously. A normal bird is not capable of crossing both beams together. The Peritec beams are housed in a fully weatherproof housing and are designed for outdoor application. They range from a 60 m set, for the average city type property, to a 100 and a 200 m set, ideal for larger properties like plots and farms. For a more secure scenario, the beams can be stacked.

The Peritec beams run in a linear direction and can only stack two sets to prevent cross talk on the frequencies. The beams have a 90% attenuation factor, which means that adverse weather conditions like, heavy rain, fog or mist will not prevent the beams from functioning correctly. The beam can distinguish between a sudden blockage from a body or a gradual deterioration, which occurs in weather conditions.

The Peritec has the alignment indicators, LEDs, on board to show when full and proper alignment exists as well as the facility to connect a voltmeter and align by ensuring 7,5 V are running in the system. The advantage of an active infrared beam is the early warning that someone has entered the property. Active detection gives good stability provided they are installed correctly and regular maintenance is done on them to stop ants nesting internally, corroding the PC board as well as to prevent dirt build up. The tamper must always be connected and set to a 24-hour zone, as the beam is invariably away from the house and one could not know that someone is attempting to disconnect them. Peritec beams are manufactured to ISO and SABS standards and every effort has been made to give protection against lightning and the harsh environment of outdoors.

The infrared beams being 880 nm cannot be seen with the naked eye, a torch or anything else. Since Peritec is manufactured locally it carries a limited warranty of one year.
