Bekaert Bastion - a joint venture company between former SA local wire manufacturer, Bastion Wire, and Bekaert, the world's largest steel wire manufacturer - continues to excell in the high security fencing market in South Africa. In the two years since the JV was announced, Bekaert Bastion has notched up 95% on its annual turnover (end December 2002).
Among its recent successes are:
Odendaalsrus High Security Prison
The first erection of a unique bowed fencing system has been installed for the perimeter of Odendaalsrus prison in the Free State. In conjunction with First Defence in the US, Bekaert Bastion developed the bowed system, which is a unique anti-climb, finger and toe proof high-tensile mesh.
The contract, worth R2 million, was commissioned by the Department of Correctional Services' head of security, Mr Mpohasa who commented on the installation, saying: "We have been working with Bekaert Bastion to develop this system and it meets our requirements exactly. We will be investigating future use of the Bekaert/First Defence bowed fencing system for other prisons around the country."
Cape Town International Airport
Worth R3 million, this contract has just commenced, due for completion in June this year and involves 13 kilometres of high security 358 mesh perimeter fencing around the airport grounds.
Nigerian oil industry
A major contract worth R10 million per annum has been awarded to the company to supply its high security 358 mesh perimeter fencing. The contract will be to supply three major oil companies based in the Niger Delta. The semi-bullet and bombproof fencing has been selected as the most suitable for protecting the refineries against vandalism and theft and is suitable for withstanding the increasing threats from mass strike action in the area.
Supplies to the Middle East
Bekaert Bastion just won a major contract to supply 150 km of stainless steel razor tape for the UAE border fence. Furthermore, the US Military has also ordered 250 km of razor tape bound for use in Kuwait.
