Custom-designed biometric solutions

September 2001 Access Control & Identity Management

Avalanche Technologies is a specialist in pure biometric access control and computer security systems. The company’s aim is to replace all keys and card-based access control systems with fingerprint access technology as well as to secure personal computers and computer networks with fingerprint security systems.

Avalanche provides biometric technology solutions in the field of person identification and verification to the corporate, leisure, hospitality, security and computer application markets. Biometric technology is a field of study that applies technology to biology giving one a realtime, hands-free computerised identification system.

Biometric technology, in the form of fingerprint access control and fingerprint PC security systems, can be applied in virtually any business in South Africa. The product is unique and can be installed in small-to-medium-sized companies as well as in larger corporate companies.

The company has a range of locally produced biometric systems including:

* BioGate 1. Biometric Gatekeeper (Biogate for short) is an access control and time-in-attendance system that uses pure fingerprint identification to allow a person access into a building. The system features advanced logging, reporting and does not require any pin codes, swipe cards or keys to allow a person access into a building.

* BioGate 2. An advanced biometric access control and time-in-attendance system, BioGate 2 uses pure fingerprinting identification, is a web-enabled, self-configuring system with extensive zoning, reporting and profiling functions, and has support for up to 20 000 users.

Features include:

Supports: support for 5000 users (upgradable to 20 000).

Identification time: less than 2 s.

Area zones: unlimited amount of area zones.

User profiling: allows to set-up a specific profile once and then assign it to all users in that profile (unlimited amount of profiling can be created).

Different functions for different fingers: for each user, different functions can be assigned to different fingers, for example, left finger opens the door and right finger sets off an alarm.

* BioGate Industrial: Built on the BioGate 2 software platform, this product is aimed at providing access control and time-in-attendance in the mining and industrial sectors. It uses a high-speed RS485 backbone and a robust fingerprint scanner in an IP65 enclosure. This scanner is able to read the fingerprint from the inside living layer of the skin making it usable in any heavy industrial environment.

* BioGate standalone unit: This is a fingerprinting-enabled, standalone unit which has support for up to 5000 users. The unit has been specially designed for application in any mining or industrial environment. Any number of these units can be networked and administered from a central point if desired.

Alternative biometric security products

* U.are.U Pro fingerprint security system: is a complete, plug-and-play solution that includes software and a fingerprint scanner.

* U.are.U Pro server software: provides additional convenience and security for network installations. The software supports Windows NT Server 4.0 and Windows 2000 server. It has the following additional capabilities:

User roaming: provides centralised storage of personal credentials and one touch Internet database allowing users access to U.are.U functionality from any workstation on the network.

Enhances administration: enables domain-wide control of user accounts.

Secure server-based authentication: maintains strict adherence to the Windows NT security architecture for networked environments that include less secure Microsoft Windows 95/98 systems.

Back-up domain controller support: provides back-up authentication services when primary domain controller is unavailable. System data is replicated on all back-up domain controllers that have U.are.U Pro Server installed.

Avalanche's engineers have designed and developed the software and its applications specifically to the South African market. Each installation can be customised to the unique needs of the client.
