February will see the ASIS International, Chapter 203 annual conference taking place in Cape Town from 4 to 6 February 2015. Titled Africa: A New Dawn – Opportunities and Challenges, this is an international security conference focusing on strategies for securing assets in Africa for the next 10-15 years. It features an array of renowned international guest speakers as well as interactive sessions, panel discussions, round tables, table-top exercises (all under Chatham House rules) with real-life experiences and solutions to deal with the many opportunities and challenges of doing business in Africa, a very dynamic and fluid continent.
Two of the speakers in this year’s conference are Dr Gert Cruywagen and Tony Crilly.
Dr Gert Cruywagen is the Director of Risk at Tsogo Sun Group, Africa’s largest owner and operator of hotels and casinos. He is also an Executive Director of Tsogosure Insurance Company Limited based in the Isle of Man.
Cruywagen is a permanent member of the King Committee on Corporate Governance. He was the convenor of the Risk Work Group of King 2 and of King 3; as such he was the principle author of the Chapter on 'The Governance of Risk' of King 3.
He serves as a non-executive independent director of the aerospace and defence Group, Denel SOC Limited, and is the current chairman of Denel Aerostructures and the past chairman of ammunition manufacturer PMP. He also serves as independent non-executive director of Accelerate Property Fund Limited. He is a member of the Client Advisory Board of Zurich Financial Services in Zurich, Switzerland and of the Africa Advisory Board of Allianz Insurance Company.
Cruywagen holds qualifications from a number of local and international universities. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Institute of Risk Management (UK) and an Honorary Life Member of four international Risk Management Institutes, namely UK, SA, Russia and Poland. He is also a member of RIMS (USA), of the Institute of Directors of South Africa, and of the U.K. Institute of Directors based in London.
Cruywagen was voted as South Africa’s 'Risk Manager of the Year' for 2009, an honour also awarded to him in 2001. He is the founder and chairman of the Cruywagen-IRMSA Risk Foundation.
Following an exceptional career in the British army, Tony Crilly joined the commercial sector in 1988 and management consultancy in 1991. He has held various positions within the security and risk management profession and has worked in many countries on complex assignments including protective security during critical negotiations for the multi-billion Al Yamamah II deal, and for the world launch of the Eurofighter Typhoon. More recently, he has been involved in the development of standards within the UK Security Industry, and on International approaches to Nuclear and Radiological Security (non-proliferation), working in association with NATO, the NNSA (USA) and MinAtom (Russian Federation). Crilly is founder and CEO of STS Risk Group, established in 1999 and based in London.
An ASIS member since 1991, Crilly is widely regarded as an expert on business risk management, strategic risk mitigation, business continuity, and integrated technical security solutions. He regularly speaks at high-level international seminars, and provides advice and assistance to corporations, heads of state, high net-worth individuals, and government departments in both the UK and abroad. In addition to his busy commercial life, he is an active member of the United Kingdom Reserve Forces in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
