Providing residents with a secure solution

August 2014 Integrated Solutions, Surveillance

A home-based IT support and Web design business was desperate to find a solution to secure its assets. The existing hardwired security solution had been stolen and house robbery and car hijacking was a major concern within this residential area.

After IP Solutions consulted with the customer, the company was able to propose a solution that encompassed a new IP video surveillance installation and a couple of wireless links to minimise structured cabling in unsecure locations. In addition, this would minimise the cost of construction as the installation would cover the weakest security points in the entire residential estate.

As an added benefit, the residents and visitors attending the on-site church in Homestead Estate, now feel safer, due to the presence of the cameras situated on every street corner. The community has bought into the project and provides electrical access for the cameras. “Omar, a newly arrived resident from the DRC, has allowed us to install two wireless radios on his house and asked us to send him an estimate on the installation of indoor cameras, as he sees the benefits of surveillance,” says Noah Mashaba, CEO of IP Solutions.

“In addition, Sister Lerato has offered us an installation space for one camera and two wireless radios at the corner of her house as well as a switch in her house.”

The security caretaker of the residential estate needed some convincing as he had had his fingers burnt with the existing solution, since it was only randomly monitored. After a demonstration by IP Solutions, outlining the benefits for the residents, he was fully on board with the plan.

IP Solutions undertook a full site survey, identified risk areas and hotspots and provided the residents with an efficient and reliable security solution. The installation included the deployment of Vivotek IP cameras and Ubiquiti wireless radios for transmission of the video footage to a central location where the ST7501 is installed and managed by the estate’s security manager.

Six IP cameras were fitted in phase one of the installation and focused on the main entrance where they are used for facial recognition and car registration plate capturing. Eight wireless radios are used for transmission purposes.

“The project time line was two weeks and IP Solutions finished the installation in one week, including testing and commissioning. We provide the client with maintenance, firmware upgrades, as well as on-site and telephonic support. Our advice for anyone considering a similar installation is to plan properly and secure the right team to provide the correct solution for the application, based on minimising future risk,” adds Mashaba.

The success of the project was measured by the successful minimising of crime in the area. “The client and the other residents are happy with the solution. Criminals know that the estate is secured, so crime is at an all-time low and church members can now rest assured that they are worshipping in a secure environment,” Mashaba concludes.
