Innovative gas safety system

May 2001 Products & Solutions

Cape-based SureGas recently introduced an innovative, locally designed gas safety system capable of detecting even the smallest gas leaks, automatically shutting off the gas supply and raising appropriate alarms.

Already the system, developed in conjunction with the University of Cape Town, the Cape Technikon and engineering consultants, has been implemented by some of the leading names in business and industry nationwide. Major corporates such as Old Mutual, Sanlam, Southern Sun International and Protea Hotels are SureGas customers.

"A plethora of statutes and regulations, combined with business objectives and customer service philosophies compel companies to maintain a high standard of safety not just in the workplace but also at the consumer interface," comments SureGas Chief Executive Simon Steward.

Key to the SureGas system is its ability to detect minute gas flows, both atmospheric and in-line, and offer early warning of a potentially serious gas leakage. Uniquely, SureGas technology can also shut off gas supplies automatically as soon as unauthorised flows are detected.

Another powerful feature is the ability to integrate with the customer's fire system. This allows the SureGas solution to automatically shut-off the gas supply in the event of a fire signal. In this instance, the system will check for leaks in-line and prevent the re-establishment of the gas supply in the event that gas flow is detected.

Steward continues: "Our safety products are suitable for all popular types of gases, including LPG, butane, propane, natural and coal gas. SureGas products have been tested and are in compliance with SABS as well as relevant European standards."

SureGas is authorised to use the 'CE' mark - the European Community standard required for all electronic products sold in Europe and the UK.

In addition, the Australian Gas Association has certified the SureGas range as being compliant with all relevant Australian gas safety standards.

Many official bodies and organisations in the SA gas industry, including the LP Gas Association, Fire Prevention Association, SA insurance industry and fire chiefs of several provinces, have endorsed SureGas products.
