In a bid to maintain its high safety record and to prevent unauthorised removal of assets from its premises, Mondi Paper in Durban has implemented a series of dome and fixed surveillance cameras supplied by digital visual management manufacturer, Intervid.

Louis van der Merwe, asset protection manager at the plant, which is located in the industrial suburb of Jacobs, south of Durban, says a combination of fixed and dome cameras have been installed at strategic points to monitor activities within the plant as well as for perimeter surveillance. "Safety of our staff takes priority and through round-the-clock vigilance in the control room we can determine who is contravening safety regulations. This allows management to take the necessary steps to prevent accidents from happening or recurring."

Damage prevention is another major reason why Mondi selected the Intervid on-site monitoring system. With the prices of equipment and paper costs spiralling, Van der Merwe says it is essential to ensure that operators perform their tasks efficiently. Monitoring allows us to detect sub-optimum performance. Van der Merwe, who has extensive security and investigative experience, says surveillance technology plays an essential role in access control at the Mondi Paper plant. "We selected the solution from Intervid because not only is it technologically advanced, but it also adds value to our safety and security programme," he explains. Using high-speed digital processing techniques a large amount of data is simultaneously processed for recording and playback of high quality video and audio.

Vital information can be extracted from any connected system and managers can remotely monitor site activity. At Mondi, video records are kept for pre-specified times before they are erased. Where necessary, recordings of certain events that may lead to prosecution or court appearances are maintained.
