IP takes the industry forward

August 2014 Surveillance

The gradual move towards IP is an exciting change that continues to allow the market place to grow and evolve. This is an important milestone for the industry in South Africa as it moves towards standardisation.

IP technology has the flexibility and scalability that analogue is lacking. It brings new functionality, including remote accessibility, which allows the user to access the security system from any computer or handheld device.

It is more cost-effective as it has a greater capacity to integrate with other systems and can be adapted for business growth and changes in technology so there is no need to keep changing the system. There is also the added advantage that if a network infrastructure already exists, no additional communication lines have to be installed.

For the convergence towards IP technology to be embraced by the South African security market, installers need to be educated on how to get the best out of it, such as the ability to achieve greater communication due to working on the same network. There is a perceived attitude that to work with IP you need to be an IT specialist but this isn’t the case. In the majority of situations, the technology is actually a lot easier to work with than many realise.

Paxton has designed products that are simple to install, use and maintain. This approach reduces the amount of time an installation takes, which in turn allows installers to focus on business development. From our own research and engagement with those who work with our systems, it’s clear that education and training is central in meeting the security demands of vertical market sectors, and this has been further highlighted in the uptake of our one-day workshops across South Africa.
