Comprehensive fire and security installation offerings

January 2014 Fire & Safety, Surveillance, Access Control & Identity Management, Integrated Solutions

Firetech Projects is one of the leading systems integrators of fire detection and suppression, access control, CCTV, evacuation and building management systems. The company was established in 1991 when the team of the disbanded Schindler fire and security division identified a gap in the market for a company that could provide a comprehensive customer-oriented fire and security installation service.

Driven by quality and efficiency, the company quickly grew to its current status. Headquartered in Centurion, Gauteng, with offices in Bloemfontein, Durban, East London and affiliated to Firetech Cape Town. Firetech Projects currently employs 96 technical specialists and 36 management, sales and administrative staff.

Sales manager Johann Blignaut explained that the company undertakes the full management of the installations on projects it is appointed to. “We do outsource smaller jobs but we take great pride in the fact that our teams are comprehensively trained to handle all large installations in the various markets we work in. We have been involved in a number of high-profile projects including the revamp on Armscor’s head office and Telkom’s new Centurion extension. Another recent project completed by Firetech is the new Brits Hospital in Brits, which has an integrated system installed that addresses intrusion detection, intercom, CCTV, access control, fire detection, audio evacuation and fire suppression.

“Many of the projects we have been involved in are of a fast track nature. We have been able to complete each project within the scheduled timeframe and according to the parameters of the client’s specifications and budget. This is made possible by the extensive experience we have gained over the past 22 years and the intellectual property and knowledge owned by our team,” he continued.

“We focus very heavily on quality and as such we subscribe to the prescribed regulations of the ISO 9000:2000 Quality Management System. We are also members of ASIB (Automatic Sprinkler Inspection Bureau), the FDIA (Fire Detection Installers Association), PSIRA (Private Security Regulatory Authority) and SAQCC (South African Qualification and Certification Committee for the fire industry). In addition, we have the necessary CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board) ratings.”

Two years ago, Firetech Projects established an affiliated company between Firetech Projects and Intesol, forming a 60% black empowerment company Firetech Intesol Projects. “We also recently opened a dedicated sprinkler division which is focused on sprinkler systems, fire hydrants and hose reels. This will allow us to concentrate our efforts in this growing market in a more targeted manner,” said Blignaut.

Blignaut said that while sourcing and installing security and fire products is the company’s core business, there are instances where Firetech has been involved in assisting with conceptualisation and specifying on projects. “We are able to leverage the experience we have gained over a number of market sectors to suggest integrated systems that will produce the required results.”

Training forms an integral part of the company’s success in the market. “It is essential for our technical team to be constantly upskilled on the products which we supply and install for projects. They regularly attend training sessions with our suppliers to ensure that they are up to speed on current technology. In addition, we undertake regular training sessions in-house. The knowledge we derive from these sessions also equips us with the necessary training material which we transfer to our clients on handover of projects. The access we have to product information allows us to select the correct technology solutions for each individual application,” Blignaut concludes.
