Modular design eases maintenance

October 2013 Integrated Solutions, Financial (Industry)

There is a word that is regarded with much contempt, apprehension and general dread within the security community and that word is downtime. The mere thought of our security and access control systems proverbially leaving their posts – even for the smallest amount of time – and leaving our charges staring into the yawning abyss of uncertainty gives us the chills.

There is simply no room for it; the criminal type seems forever poised towards seeking out these momentary lapses in security, to exploit vulnerabilities and to infiltrate fallible barriers. One of the ways in which we somewhat pre-emptively address the issue of downtime and the subsequent increased threat, is to regularly schedule maintenance to be done on the security and access control systems, but that can in and of itself be a time-consuming (not to mention extremely costly) exercise that puts the security infrastructure at considerable risk of circumvention.

Centurion Systems is a company that is well aware of this weakness in modern security technology, and continues to innovate ways in which maintenance to their products is either painless or altogether unnecessary. It does this by equipping their wide range of access automation products – which includes swing and sliding gates, traffic barriers, roadway spikes and loop detectors – with removable terminal strips, intelligent LCD controllers that provide comprehensive audible and visual diagnostics and sealed, fully maintenance-free batteries, among other things.

One example of Centurion’s ongoing commitment to providing its clients with reliable access automation products that are easily maintained and largely autonomous, can be seen in the D2 Turbo sliding gate motor. The click-together design and modular construction of which make it simple to assemble and disassemble for maintenance procedures. This design philosophy is also evident in Centurion’s Claws roadway spikes and Trapex barrier fences, both of which are constructed in a modular fashion (which also makes them easy to transport and tailor to individual site requirements).

The use of audible and visual diagnostic feedback has proven a tremendous advantage to installers and end-users alike. Where historically the person or company responsible for the maintenance of the system might have been reduced to blindly troubleshooting and hoping that he will eventually happen upon the root of the problem, Centurion’s new generation D-Series operators provide all the necessary information on system health – charging and battery voltages, number of power downs, condition of fuses, drive circuit health, spring tension (in the case of traffic barriers) and effectively takes the frustrating guesswork out of maintenance procedures.
