Remote monitoring catches car thief

October 2012 Surveillance

A vehicle, stolen from a resident’s home in Constantia was returned to them less than a week later through the recently installed Verifier Visec LPR cameras positioned throughout the Constantia Valley as part of the Constantia Valley Watch Association initiative.

“We loaded the vehicles registration details onto the community LPR (Licence Plate Recognition) camera database when it was stolen on the 14th of August,” says Mike Voortman, Verifier director and Constantia Valley Watch chairman. “At 3:30am on the 20th of August, an LPR camera position in Constantia triggered an alert via the Visec software that this vehicle had entered the area near a camera point. Verifier off-site CCTV monitoring control room verified that the alert and snapshot matched the description of the vehicle and immediately put an alert out on the neighbourhood watch community radio.”

An hour later an ADT response officer found the vehicle parked. SAPS and surrounding neighbourhood watch operations teams were advised. The neighbourhood watch maintained a stakeout on the vehicle until SAPS arrived. “Because the vehicle was parked it was assumed that the vehicle thieves were probably committing a burglary in the area and would return to the vehicle with their loot,” says Voortman.

SAPS completed a full check of the area and found a home nearby with the driveway gate forced partially open. A suspect was found hiding in the bushes and arrested. Found on him were a pair of wet gloves and a blade – no other suspects were found.

“This is a wonderful example of various role players working together, the effectiveness of the community radio, and the incredible power of the community camera systems with the licence plate recognition data system,” remarks Voortman.
