3M Security Systems Division has helped government authorities develop successful security initiatives and enhanced risk protection through innovative solutions for border management, biometrics, document security and offender monitoring. The division revolves around three basic elements of security, namely 3M Issuance Systems, 3M Authentication Systems and 3M Security Materials.

This business portfolio extends to solutions that include:

* Security documents – passports, identity cards, visa documents and driver’s licences.

* Security credentials – product counterfeit protection solutions, tax stamps and security labels.

* Authentication – immigration, border control and commercial citizen authentication.

* Biometrics – law enforcement, nationwide civilian applications and physical and logical access control solutions.

The Security Fair headed up by 3M executive vice president for the Safety, Security & Protection Service Business, Julie Bushman, included workshop presentations highlighting global best-practice solutions.

The key focus areas of the presentations were biometric identification solutions; secure document and material solutions; and document readers and systems. There was substantial interest in biometrics particularly in the applications for government, law enforcement and even commercial applications. In the field of secure document and material solutions 3M showed its innovative thinking in secure materials that are able to handle identification and authentication on multi-layered materials, with additional security at each level.
